The Bank of Canada is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate neutral this week at 2.25%, after a surprise GDP increase of 2.6% for Q3 which avoided a technical recession and strong jobs reports. The BoC has cut rates 100bp since the beginning of 2025 as it battled stagnant growth, inflation concerns, and tariff concerns.
The Federal Open Market Committee will be holding their final meeting of the year and is currently expected to cut the overnight rate 25 bp’s to a rate of 3.75%. This meeting will be particularly important in understanding the Fed’s monetary policy approach for 2026. There is currently significant division amongst the members of the FOMC regarding the best course of action for interest rates. Despite the labor market clearly indicating signs of cooling, officials are worried about the continued effects of inflation that has remained above the natural rate of 2% since 2020.
