Navigating Unique Career Challenges

Insights from Comerica’s leaders

In today’s professional landscape, women continue to make strides in leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship. However, the journey to success is not without its challenges. Many women face unique hurdles, from self-doubt and societal expectations to workplace biases and systemic barriers. At Comerica Bank, we recognize these challenges and are committed to supporting women as they navigate their careers with confidence and resilience.

1. Overcoming the Confidence Gap
One of the most common challenges women face is self-doubt, often referred to as the confidence gap, or impostor syndrome. Many women hesitate to apply for a job or pursue a leadership role unless they feel 100% qualified. Melinda Chausse, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer at Comerica shares from her experience:

"I have seen women over the course of my career perhaps shy away from an opportunity because they didn't think that they were 100% ready or 110% ready, which is what they think they need to be."

This hesitation can limit career growth and prevent women from seizing valuable opportunities.

Breaking Through: Apply even if you’re not “fully” qualified – You can learn as you go. If you meet 80-90% of the qualifications, go for it. Take stretch assignments – Growth happens outside of your comfort zone.

2. Embracing Self-Advocacy and Asking for Help
Some women feel uncomfortable asking questions, seeking help, or negotiating for better opportunities because they worry it will be seen as a weakness. However, true strength lies in recognizing when support is needed and confidently advocating for oneself.

Breaking Through: Ask for mentorship and guidance – Seeking help is not a weakness; it’s a sign of ambition. Negotiate your worth – Whether it’s a salary, a promotion, or resources for your role, advocate for what you deserve. Develop executive presence – Confidence in your voice and ideas will make a significant impact on your career.

3. Taking Risks and Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable
Many women approach career opportunities with a checklist mentality, believing they must meet every qualification before stepping into a new role. However, growth often comes from taking risks and embracing challenges outside of one’s comfort zone.

Women who step outside their comfort zones and embrace challenges often find that discomfort leads to immense personal and professional growth.

Breaking Through: Adopt a mindset of continuous learning – You don’t need to know everything; you just need to be willing to grow. Take on projects that challenge you and push you beyond your current skill set. Embrace discomfort. The best career advice? “Be comfortable with the uncomfortable.”
