In the past week, we experienced a major dichotomy in price performance of the U.S. equity market as virtually half the market posted gains, while the other half posted declines. Energy was impacted by what looks to be a breakdown in the Russian and OPEC alliance that has served to limit production, which brought supply and demand back into balance. The price of seaborn Brent crude oil fell 5% last week, leading to 5% declines among U.S. refiners and oilfield service providers. The combined impact sent the energy sector down 3.6% last week. Financial service stocks fell 2.2%, driven by asset managers and banks, as interest rates remained below earlier levels despite the decline of tensions in the European bond market. The looming implementation of trade tariffs led the industrial and materials sectors to post declines of 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively, last week as well. On the plus side of the ledger, the consumer discretionary and staples sectors posted gains, thanks to merger and acquisition activity in the entertainment and media group and growing evidence of sustained inflation for food and beverage prices. The discretionary stocks added 2%, while staples picked up 1.4%. Rounding out the winners for the week were the utility stocks, up 1.8%, benefiting from the stagnation in interest rates. For the market overall, the S&P 500® Index suffered a fractional 0.10% loss last week, while the small-cap S&P 600 picked up a fractional 0.04% gain. The persistent rise in the value of the U.S. dollar continues to adversely impact global market returns, as this week the MSCI EAFE® Index fell 0.52%, and the MSCI Emerging Market Markets lost 1.9%. Commodity prices fell prey to the impact of impending trade tariffs as witnessed by the 4% loss for agricultural prices, and the 3% fall in industrial metals.
