Hays assumed Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel in August 2022 after serving as interim Chief Legal Officer. He previously served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, where he was responsible for overseeing all defensive litigation matters for Comerica and advising on human resources and related corporate operations.
Prior to joining Comerica in 2007, he was a partner at K&L Gates where he represented management in all aspects of labor and employment law, including litigation, agency representation, union avoidance, extensive client counseling on day-to-day employment management and governmental compliance issues. Hays’ experience while in private practice involved trial work, arbitrations, government investigations, wage & hour and OFCCP auditing and client counseling on employment decisions, policies, and issues.
Hays continues to serve as a leader in the legal community, authoring several articles on employment law topics. He also remains active in his community, sitting on the board of directors for the Child and Family Guidance Center, a nonprofit organization in Dallas that helps address the mental health needs of children, adults and families.
Hays earned his law degree from Drake University where he served on the Drake Law Review and a bachelor’s degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa.
